Maintaining Your Patio Doors

If you own Hunterdon County patio doors, you know they don’t require a lot of maintenance. However, there are some times where your patio door will need a little tune up. Particularly sliding glass doors can benefit from a little cleaning and maintenance. It won’t take too long, so here are a few things you can do to keep your sliding door running smoothly and efficiently.

Clean the Track

Walking over the track between the outdoors and your home will quickly start to show. Black grime and dirt can grow and build in your track faster than you’d think. All that dirt will slow down your door and create a disgusting environment. Take this spring to look down at your track and accept that it must be done. To get inside those little crevices, use a toothbrush or a wire brush. It may take some time, but it will be much easier to clean using this than a wet cloth. Just scrub to get the dirt loose, then use a vacuum to gather all the muck. Make sure the track is nice and dry so mold and dirt have less opportunities to build in the future. Try to clean the track regularly by remembering to at least send the vacuum through the track when you vacuum the rest of the room.

Lubricate the Track

Using a WD-40 or a silicone based lubricant spray, coat the entire sliding glass door track after you’ve cleaned it out. This will give an extra boost to your door so it continues to run smoothly and easily. It’s much harder to get a door unstuck than it is to prevent the sticking problem. Simply lubricating the track will keep your door going longer. These sprays are available at most local hardware stores.

Monitor for Broken Glass

If you notice moisture starting to form inside your glass panes, this means something’s wrong. Once your glass has been compromised to the elements like that, the problem will only grow. Eventually mold will start to form and your glass door will quickly become grosser and less effective. You can’t keep out the cold with a malfunctioning patio door. If you see that the door glass has been compromised or broken in any way, call in a professional to repair or replace the damage as soon as possible to save on your electric bills.

Replace Weatherstripping

Eventually, the weatherstripping on your glass door will wear down and need replacing. This effectively seals the door tightly to keep out the elements. Depending on which weatherstripping material you use, replacing this is fairly simple. Markey LLC always works to provide premium products with the greatest energy efficiency, and we like to keep them that way. If you notice your glass door is a little drafty, consider replacing the weatherstripping of your patio door. Whether you do it yourself or call in a professional, it’s necessary to keep your home energy efficient.

Clean the Glass

This may seem obvious, but among all the other chores you have to do, who has time to worry about a few fingerprints on a glass door? But keeping your glass door clean helps keep the rest of your home sanitary. Because many people don’t think about this spot, it’s one of the easiest places for germs to grow. With such a high amount of traffic and so many hands, cleaning the door is absolutely necessary.
